The demonstration on Alexanderplatz on 4 November 1989 was a historic event of great political and social significance in the final phase of the GDR. It is considered the largest officially authorised demonstration in the country’s history and marked a turning point in the peaceful protest of the population against the regime. From a truck converted into a podium, prominent figures of GDR society – among them Christa Wolf – spoke at this very site, openly calling for reform and freedom of expression.
