Beneath Alexanderplatz lies an extensive network of over- and underpasses, constructed in the 1960s and 70s as part of the socialist redesign of the square. The so-called pedestrian tunnels and passages were intended to separate traffic flows and transform Alexanderplatz into a modern, functional centre of the GDR. The over- and underpass located on our site is now closed – it remains as a relic of a failed vision of the future, forming an invisible second layer of the city.
