First mentioned in the 13th century outside the former city wall, St. George’s Church was rebuilt three times between 1780 and 1950. The last building was a splendid testament to the baroque city of the 19th century, complete with a garden complex. (The 1780 reconstruction was late Baroque and already displayed classicist elements.) After partial destruction during the war, the GDR government demolished the church along with the historic city layout. As a reinterpretation, parts of the foundation lying beneath the pavement, as well as the garden design, are now being reimagined.
