For the 20th anniversary of the GDR in 1969, Karl-Marx-Allee became the stage for a monumental display of military parades, mass choreography, and socialist pathos. The symbol “XX,” used at the time to mark the occasion, is reinterpreted here – as a sign for the use of public space as a communicator, ambassador, and site of dialogue between the actors of the Haus der Statistik and the passing inhabitants of the city.
